When I first started attending FastForward Adventure Reporters camp, I was just a fourth grader with a passion for writing. In my first week at the camp, we interviewed a magician who had performed for the Rolling Stones, drove go-carts at a race car track, and even went on a specialized scavenger hunt in downtown San Francisco. Being able to have my writing published for other kids my age and older to read gave me a sense of pride and enthusiasm that drove me back to this camp every year. In the summer weeks I’ve spent at FastForward, we have talked to Mickey Hart from the Grateful Dead, sat in the Giants dugout and interviewed the players of the world-series championship team, and visited YouTube and Facebook.
From posing for a picture with a big shot movie producer to behind-the-scenes at a local ice cream shop, there is always something to capture our attention. After several years, I became a Counselor-in-Training and earned the opportunity to conduct occasional private interviews throughout the school year, talking to movie stars such as Dakota Fanning and Salma Hayek. Every interview I have been on has been unforgettable in a unique way: a filmmaker giving insight about his film, or a political activist offering new perspective on a particular issue.
You don’t have to dream of becoming a reporter to enjoy this camp and gain incredible life experiences. Whether you’re a writer, sports enthusiast, artist, actor, or budding politician FastForward offers something for everyone.
